CPIC/Council/CFT Meeting update - 09/08/2021

Cornwall Partners in Care hold weekly briefings with Cornwall Council and Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation trust. These meetings involve Jonathan Price (Joint Director Adult Care and Health for Cornwall Council and NHS Kernow) and occasionally colleagues from the Council, David Smith (CPIC Chairman), and representatives from the CPIC Committee.

Daily update - 9th August 2021

Jonathon was on leave today so we met with Kate, Val, Carolyn Montgomery and Claire Hall-Davies. We discussed the following;

We had our first additional Monday session today, and Val stood in for Jonathon who was unavailable. We discussed the following;

  1. The "no jab - no job" policy in Care Homes could lead to a significant number of people leaving the workforce. Christine stated that some are going over to the NHS, and Mary stated that some are walking out now. The next Communication Bulletin will outline how the changes will impact the sector.
  2. Christine stated that relatives requiring care over the weekend were being told to dial 999 which would increase the burden on an already overstretched service. Val stated that there had been a significant number of Homecare handbags, and that Treliske continues to experience serious capacity issues. It was noted that the Police are now assisting with ambulance transfers.and that an ICC Major Incident had been declared. At the last Care Home Partnership Board meeting a point had been raised that families need to be kind to Care staff.
  3. Phil stated that he has experienced a trickle of returnees from the Hospitality sector. Otherwise a shortage of staff was impacting on service delivery across the sector. There is some pressure building for social care staff to be recognised as key workers as regards provision of accommodation which was now a major limiting factor especially as some temporary care staff will be required to vacate student accommodation on 1st September. Mary asked if military accommodation had been investigated and Val agreed to look into this, as this could allow some UK wide and overseas recruitment to take place. Recruitment from the Republic of Ireland could also be an option.

That's it for now - the next meeting is on Friday.
